My father volunteered for Navy service in 1943 at the age of 32. He always reminded me that he was not drafted and eagerly anticipated service. He is a part of a generation of men who chant the serendipity of the age and time that they were actually part of a righteous cause. My father, who was a fierce Republican (I grew up listening to him argue with my liberal mother), thought the hubris of the Bush administration was a stark contrast to the war he experienced. He actually voted for President Obama, which was I admit, assisted by a loving daughter's due diligence.
